Incredible West

Mumbai is located on the west coast of India. The city has grown by a series of land reclamations which now link the original islands into one mass. Aurangabad is the gateway to the World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora. Aurangabad was named after the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb. In the city are three museums housing the art treasures of the region -- the Sunheri Mahal Museum, the University Museum and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum. Aurangabad Caves is located just on the border of Aurangabad.

 


Itinerary


Day 1

Mumbai
Arrive and check in at hotel. Visit the local markets for shopping and souvenirs. Overnight at hotel.

 
Day 2 Mumbai - Aurangabad (350 kms / 5 hrs approx)
After breakfast proceed to Aurangabad. On arrival check in at hotel. Sightseeing tour of Aurangabad which includes Bibi-ka-Maqbara, Panchakki, Himroo Factory, Killa Arrack, Jama Masjid, Kali Masjid, Shah Ganj Mosque, Chauk Masjid and Lal Masjid. Overnight at hotel.

 
Day 3 Aurangabad
After early breakfast leave for a tour of Ajanta Caves, built in the 19th century, lying deep within the Sahyadri hills, cut into the carved mountain side, above the Waghora river. They depict the story of Buddhism, spanning a period from 200 BC to 650 AD. The 29 caves were built as secluded retreats of the Buddhist monks, who taught and performed rituals in the Chaityas and Viharas, the ancient seats of learning, and nerve - centers of the Buddhist cultural movement. Using simple tools like hammer and chisel, the monks carved out the impressive figures adorning the walls of these structures. Overnight at hotel.

 
Day 4 Aurangabad
After breakfast depart for a tour of Ellora, 34 in number, are carved into the sides of a basaltic hill, the finest specimens of cave - temple architecture. These structures representing the three faiths of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, were carved during the 350 AD to 700 AD period. See the Kailash Temple, Aurangabad Caves, Daulatabad Fort etc. Overnight at hotel.

 
Day 5 Aurangabad - Mumbai (350 kms / 5 hrs approx)
After breakfast leave for Mumbai. On arrival check in at hotel. During afternoon leave for a short tour to the Elephanta Caves and sightseeing tour covering Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Chowpatty Beach, Victoria Terminus . Overnight at hotel.

 
Day 6 Depart Mumbai
Transfer to airport / station for your return journey.
